Do you want to install laminate flooring like a pro? Look no further! Follow these few simple steps and you’ll have beautiful, high-quality laminate flooring.
Tools & Materials You Will Need
Before you get started, you will need the following tools and material:
- Tape measure
- Laminate flooring of your choice
- Underlayment
- Flat bar
- Saw & blades – table saw or miter box & blade
- Jigsaw –for round cuts
- Self-leveling compound –to even a dip in the floor
- Silicone sealant –for a tight seal hare borders meet the walls
- Tapping block & hammer
- Pull bar
- Vacuum cleaner
Start by taking proper measurements of the area that you’ll be installing the laminate flooring. Then, cut the planks to fit accordingly and make sure the pieces are organized before installing so you don’t get confused. When cutting the planks, use a table saw or miter box & blade for straight cuts, and a jigsaw for round cuts. If any dips or imperfections occur in the floor, be sure to address them with a self-leveling compound so the floor is even. When installing, place the board with the tongue facing the wall and secure it with a tapping block and hammer. Next, fold the tongue into the groove of the next board and tap it in place with a pull bar. Continue this method until the entire room is filled, and then use a vacuum cleaner to remove excess debris. Make sure to leave a small expansion gap (usually around 1/8-inch) around the perimeter of the walls and cover it up with a silicone sealant so you get a tight seal.
You may not need transitions if the flooring planks are meeting another type of flooring in the same room. If this is the case, you can use an underlayment and install the planks end to end without using a transition strip. The underlayment will provide a smooth surface for the planks and reduce noise and shock absorption. Keep in mind, though, that leaving an expansion gap between the walls and planks is still recommended, even if you’re not using a transition strip.
Installing laminate flooring is not as difficult as it seems! Just remember to take precautions and use the right tools, and you’ll be sure to achieve the perfect look. You can find all the tools and materials you need to get started at any home improvement store.
